PRIMORDIAL Singer Leads BATHORY Tribute At Ireland's DAY OF DARKNESS Festival
June 13, 2004PRIMORDIAL's Alan "Nemtheanga" Averill fronted a special tribute to BATHORY's Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg at Ireland's Day of Darkness festival on Saturday, June 12. Nemtheanga was joined for the impromptu performance by a host of artists from Ireland's tight-knit black metal scene.
The hastily assembled tribute was conceived just 24 hours before the event, with the festival organizers deciding to allocate time to a tribute performance during a slot vacated by Dublin's sleaze metal outfit, FISTED SISTER, who were forced to cancel their planned performance.
PRIMORDIAL frontman Nemtheanga stepped in to assemble a line up which included himself on vocals and guitar, Joey (guitar) and Necrohammer (drums) from SOL AXIS, Phil from GAESA (bass) and Brian O'Connor formerly of legendry Irish black metal outfit KINGDOM, on guest vocals. The group performed a memorable set of emotionally charged renditions of several BATHORY classics including "Woman Of Dark Desires", "Raise The Dead" and "A Fine Day To Die".
Quorthon, who was found dead at his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, June 7 (as exclusively reported here on June 8),was known the world over as one of black metal's founding fathers. MARILYN MANSON and METALLICA are among the diverse array of groups who claim they have been influenced by the legendary Swedes.
Swedish death metal veterans DISMEMBER headlined the festival, which took place in Ballylinan, Co Laois, Ireland. The group were joined by eleven other groups from throughout Ireland and Europe for a frenzied twelve hours of metal.
The full lineup for Day of Darkness 2004 was as follows: DISMEMBER, ANCIENT RITES, ABADDON INCARNATE, MAEL MORDHA, PUTREFY, THE SWARM, OLD SEASON, SINISTER DEMISE, MABUS, SOL AXIS and DEMIZE.
